ARCHITECTURAL CULTURE AND HISTORY PROJECT 1 : PRECEDENT STUDY AND ANALYSIS
In a group of 6, we are required to study a building, then produce an analysis board and model. Our group's assigned building is Temple Of Hatshepsut. This project is to introduce basic architectural theory through study of concepts, patterns and architectural language of assigned building. It also develops and expands the design concept derived from the precedent study analysis.
PART A: ONLINE FORUM DISCUSSION
We are required to answer the one of the question listed below for the On-line Group Forum:
Brief General/Background Questions:
1. Who is the architect or founder of the building?
2. Where and when was the building built?
3. What is the form, or shape of the building? (Question I chose)
4. What is the function or purpose of the building?
5. What materials / methods are used for construction?
6. What makes your building historically significant / meaningful?
For this section, we are required to do research based on topics chosen and then use it as a topic for forum discussion on Taylor's portal, Times. It is an individual assignment. I have chosen the 6th question.
PART B: Analysis Presentation Board
We are required to produce an analysis presentation board individually that consists of illustrative and abstractive diagrams, drawings and text. The drawings should be composed on one A2 board only and strictly hand-drawn and hand-written.
The analysis should also include answers to the Precedent Study Analysis questions below:
1. How does the building reflect the spirit of the time and place for which it was built?
2. What is the initial ideas and design concept of the building?
Other than that, we are also required to select and conduct analysis of one #1 to #5, synthesize the design concept Parti of #6, then illustrate precedent Study Analysis in relation to the series of building conceptual elements
#1. Concept and Architecture analysis (i. Architect and/or Building concepts, ii.
Architecture/Style)
TU Bachelor of Science (Honours) (Architecture) 3 | P a g e
#2. Building massing analysis (i. Material and Structure, ii. Geometry iii. Unit to Whole) ( I CHOSE)
#3. Circulation Analysis (i. Circulation to Use-Space, ii. Natural ventilation)
#4. Spatial Organization analysis (i. Spatial planning & Siting, ii. Building sequence and
process, iii. Public vs. private, iv. Axes, v. Symmetry & balance, vii. Repetitive to unique,
viii. Additive and subtractive, ix. Hierarchy)
#5. Building plan-section/elevation analysis (i. Plan to Section or Elevation, ii. Natural light
penetration)
#6. Partà - Culminates and Summarizes (i. gesture, ii. essence, iii, dominant idea, iv salient
characteristic of the building)
The topic I have chosen in this section for the analysis board is #1.

PART C: 3D ABSTRACTION MODEL
We are required to create an abstraction model to communicate the precedent and conceptual analysis. Rather than creating the whole building assigned, it is vital that the models should communicate the important structure and components, as well as the creative and innovative ideas and concepts. The material used in our group to create the model of Temple of Hatshepsut is Balsa timber.

REFLECTION
In this project, I have learned a lot about the interesting history of Temple of Hatshepsut: the Architect, the love affairs, the story behind the temple and the smallest details of the building. This project has tackled my curiousity in studying all of the Temple's interesting facts and and important aspects. Other than that, I have learned to work in a group and the ways to manage work in between members, and nonetheless, good team cooperation. Last but not least, is learning to be attentive to every details, be it the particulars of each part of the model, or the fine research of the analysis board.
