PROJECT 1: SELF- EXPRESSION THROUGH OBJECT

We are required to design and produce a mask based on our own personality for this individual project. Not only we have to express our inner most self and character through the mask design, we are also required to study our traits and how it can be expressed with the use of principles of design.

The following is my design of the mask :

It consists of 3 mask parts: Talk, Think and Indifferent.

Think mode is where the face shows serious and frowny expression because it represents thinking; the brain is being at its most emotional and expressive state, it sparkles bombarstic ideas. Colourful colours are painted on that part of the brain to indicate creativity.

Talk mode is where the face shows bliss and happiness, it has blushed cheeks, high cheekbones, laughing mouth and smiley eyes. However, the brain is not functioning because talking is not the way I express myself, hence it is grey coloured.

Think and Talk merges together to form Indifferent. The two extreme characters, being extrovert and introvert combine together and form an expressionless part of the mask.

The mask is a combination of 3 masks, after being glued together, it is covered with modeling clay and Plaster Of Paris and it then coloured with poster color to enhance the design.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, I have learned the elements and principles of Design. I have also learned how to explore and apply principles to communicate subjective ideas through objects. Most importantly, I have learned to produce objects to communicate abstractive ideas.

PROJECT 2: LIFE CAPSULE

In a group of 4, we are required to design a 24-hour-use of space designated for a single occupant. The limited space challenges us to consider body dimensions, body movements, human behavious and user needs. Hence, before commencing the design development for the capsule, we went through some class activities that further our understanding of the body. We studied the scale and proportion of each body parts and produced sketches of body movements.

After having thorough study of the human anatomy, we have produced a design of our life capsule.

It is a life capsule designated for an Artist. The occupant can sleep, relax, read, work and paint in it. He/she can read before sleep and can easily reach the books because it is designed to monimize body movements. When the bed is not being used, it can be folded into a back rest, so that the occupant can use the table to work. Outside the bed area is a platform that holds the easel, the occupant will have a good view while painting.

REFLECTION

This project helped me in exploring the human anthropometry and ergonomics that relate to space. Also, it has made me understand the scale and proportion of human body and its relation to a designed space or exclosure. Most importantly, it has introduced the idea of human factors, for example size and shape, to the design of space and how it improves comfort, safety and productivity.

PROJECT 3: DREAM SCAPE FOR THE SELF

FIRST ACTIVITY

We are introduced and given lecture on some Architecture elements, namely Vertical linear elements, Horizontal linear elements and overhead plane. We are then required to gather example pictures of the elements in a group of two for a presentation. I have teamed up with Mahi and have chosen to research on Vertical linear elements. The following screenshot image is our powerpoint presentation:

SECOND ACTIVITY

We are required to prepare a kit of all the vertical, linear and overheard plane elements and design a model using all the prepared parts to design a model. A hand drawn panel is also required for the presentation of the model. The following is the outcome of the activity:

REFLECTION

Throughout the class activities, I have understood more about Entrance, Path and Focal Point of an Architecture and their purpose according to different function of the buillding.

FINAL PROJECT:  DREAM SCAPE FOR THE SELF

We are required to design a dream place for a celebrity, according to his/her needs and interests, considering the aspects we have learned in the previous projects ( Expression Through Object and Life Capsule ). For this final individual project, I have chosen Coco Chanel to be my dream client. In order to know more of her needs and what she has always yearned for, I have read through biographies and watched interviews of her.

After I have studied traits and personalities of Coco Chanel, I started to do some mock up models based on her extraordinary personalities.

After being more confident with my design, I proceeded with the exterior details and spatial refinement. The following are my final design for this project.

THE EXTERIOR

THE INTERIOR

Coco Chanel is born in the 19th century, hence the inspiration taken from neo-classical architecture, and is then used to design the exterior of the mansion: the window designs shows clear depiction of neo-classical architecture details. The form of the exterior is of basic shapes -being cubic and retangular- because it portrays Coco being authentic and that she loves simplicity. The entrance of the mansion is obvious, because it is elongated and is protuding out of the building, hence after entering the building, there is a straightfoward path that leads visitors to the gallery, the flow is obvious.

The Ground level consist of Coco's workplace and a gallery of her designs. The opening in the middle of the gallery leads to the underground.  Walls painted in black, the underground -also a gallery- showcases a different dimension of Coco. The black walls represent Coco being mysterious, as she has always been hiding away from her dark childhood; she has never revealed any of it to the media.

From the Ground floor to the First floor, there is a spiral staircase for Coco and her lovers to reach the first floor, which is more intimate and romantic. The spiral staircase is enclosed in the corner of the ground floor because of Coco's trait of being mysterious. Upon reaching the first floor, she will feel sunlight vaguely lighting up the room. The first glimpse of the first floor would be the Parasitic design of the glass roof, it represents Surprise and The Unexpected because Coco is always unpredicatable. The flooring of the First floor has two slim openings that allow light to penetrate through and light up the two rooms beneath.

REFLECTION

Throughout this project, I have not only understood and apply basic design principles and terminologies, I have also enhanced and becoming more familiar with study models, sketching, visualizing, drawing diagrams and technical drawings. Other than that, I am able to create, articulate and illustrate spatial qualities through perspective drawings. Most importantly, I am able to produce and choose wisely among types of models with the aim of generating and developing design as well as better presentation of idea.
